Dogs and food,

There are so many? Which one is right?

There are many dog foods out there and it can be hard to choose one. The main thing is pick a dog food that your dog/puppy likes and stick with it. Commercial dog/puppy food is the best; because it has everything a dog/puppy needs for good growth and nutrition. It is best to buy smaller bags of dog/puppy food so you can see if your dog/puppy will like it and will eat. Also, not all foods agree with every dog's digestive system, so make sure the food you pick does not make your dog/puppy sick. If it does, don't feed it to them anymore. If you need to change foods, do it slowly because quick change can cause stomach upsets too.

Feeding Puppies:

Puppies may be fed as much as three or more times a day.
Any puppy you get should already be weaned and about ten weeks old. You should only feed your puppy "puppy food" until they are about 6 to 8 months old, it may be longer for some dogs. Be sure to consult your vet before switching your puppy to adult food. When he's about 3 months old, you can switch the puppy to twice-a-day feedings. Between 6 and 8 months, gradually mix the puppy food into an adult formula over a several week time span.

For puppies of large or giant breeds, look for special foods of lower nutrient density. With these dogs, rapid growth can exacerbate degenerative hip problems or joint disease. Although hip dysplasia is a genetic problem, overfeeding at a young age can contribute to it.

Also, you should be very mindful about over feeding your dog, overfeeding can lead to doggie obesity. Not good for the dog, it is hard on their joints and may lead to other health issues. If your dog is overweight consult your vet for help bringing their weight down to a normal level.

Feeding Adult Dogs:

Adult dogs maybe feed once or twice a day, most vets recommend twice a day.

These are the Daily amounts, if you feed your dog twice a day (recommended) be sure you divide the amount in half. I would do it, but you humans invented math for a reason, or if you really don't feel like doing the math, click on one of the bottons below and a java script will give you the information you need.
